The Solid Waste Division operates the city owned landfill located approximately one mile north of the City on 9th Street (112 Roger Canyon Road). The landfill serves the City of Laramie as well as residents in rural Albany County. City collection crews, two private companies, the University of Wyoming and the general public use this facility to dispose of all solid waste generated in this area.

The annual volume received at the landfill is approximately 72,000 cubic yards or 36,400 tons. There is one attendant on site and one to three equipment operators each day. It encompasses 250 acres, and is a Type I permitted facility.  The landfill utilizes a multiple trench design and haul back method of operation. The annual budget for this operation is $1,204,349.

The landfill has a remaining life expectancy of 40 years at current disposal rates. In the last ten years, environmental concerns have resulted in significant regulatory changes in the landfill industry. The Solid Waste Division is pleased to report that this landfill meets all current DEQ and EPA regulations, thereby assuring protection of the area's land, water, and air resources.

Collection

Solid Waste collections occur twice a week (manual collection), and once per week for all areas experiencing automated collection for all in-city residential units of two or fewer units as required by City Ordinance.

Manual Collection: The City currently uses a manual mid-truck loading system. This division has five collection trucks and nine routes. There are 7,500 accounts which are about 84% of the $909,280 annual budget. There are eleven full-time collection personnel.

Automated Collection:  The automated garbage collection system was started in June of 2009 and currently incorporates the areas of Alta Vista, Golf Course, Grand View Heights, Imperial Heights, Indian Hills, Laramie Ridge, Westfield Village, West Laramie, Riverside, Cottonwood, and Westside. Collection for areas with automated garbage collection is now one time per week.

Please check back often for more information, including public meetings regarding the phase in of the automated collection system and to check for public meetings emcompassing your area of garbage collection.

Commercial Collection: Collection is provided to 250 businesses and multi-unit residential facilities. One collection truck operates six days per week allowing collections of one to six times per week. One employee operates this front loading automated collection unit. This operation competes with private collection companies and accounts for about 16% of the $1,204,349 annual budget.

Residential refuse and landfill fees are based on the number of kitchen units in the residence such as a single family unit, a basement rental, duplex or multiple apartments. Each kitchen unit may have no more three 20 gallon cans or two 32 gallon cans.  Areas with the automated collection system will be given a city provided 96 gallon poly cart for use with the automated collection system.  You may use the City of Laramie for your hauler or contract a private hauler if you own a residence that has three or more units.
