Compost Program - Pilot Program

The City of Laramie, with permission from the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality began the pilot compost program in July of 2009.  The program is utilizing both green waste that has been diverted from the landfill and biosolids produced from the Laramie Waste Water Treatment Plant.

Yard Waste

Although yard waste and other "green wastes" are not banned from the landfill at the current time, the city strongly encourages all residents to take their green waste to the landfill for use in the compost program.  Any green waste that can be diverted from the landfill will not only help in producing compost, but will also save the city valuable landfill space for items that are not compostable or recyable.

Items Accepted for Compost:

  • Grass Clippings
  • Leaves
  • Branches
  • Brush
  • Garden Waste
  • Manure
  • Hay
  • Straw

*Incidental amounts of weeds (i.e. Canada Thistle, Yellow Sweet Clover, etc.) are acceptable with the items listed above.  Please do not place large amounts of these materials at the compost facility.

*There is no charge for clean, garbage free green waste delivered to the landfill.  Any green waste coming into the landfill that is contaminated with garbage will be charged at the current rate(s).

Food Waste

Aside from vegetables and garden waste, food waste is currently not accepted at the compost facility.  The city is currently working on integrating food wastes into the compost program.

Please check back often to find out more information about the compost program.
